The European Commission would like to tighten existing emission limits for SO2, NOx and dust arising from fossil fuel power stations. However, under the current proposal these would only apply to new plants. The report suggests that the proposals should be stricter and should apply to both new and existing power plants.
The current widespread use of flue-gas desulphurisation for SO2 reduction in the EU, coupled with advances in selective catalytic reduction for NOx abatement, mean that more stringent emission limits are achievable.
