Radioactive waste sent to landfill by Sellafield

The operators, Sellafield Ltd, are adamant no one would have been affected by the mistake and have pledged to hold a full investigation.

Bags of radioactive waste were sent to the Lillyhall landfill site near to the power station.

Managers of the station said today (April 27) that an ‘initial analysis’ showed ‘no environmental implications.’

A statement from the group stated: “Our assessment has also determined that the maximum potential dose to a member of staff at the Lillyhall site as a result of this would be significantly less than a member of the public would receive from normal background radiation.

“However, as a result of this incident, the disposal of bagged process wastes from the site has been suspended until further investigations have been carried out.”
