Thermal Oxidation is accepted as the Best Available Control Technology to deal with the worst odours generated by processes such as rendering, the food industry, fermentation, and the energy from waste sector. It is reliable proven technology that needs minimal manpower and maintenance once it is correctly specified, designed and installed.
The operating concept is to subject the polluted air stream in a combustion chamber to high temperatures (typically between 750 and 950 Deg C ) for a specified time (usually 0.6 to 2 seconds), under turbulent conditions, which oxidises the chemical bonds in the odour generating specifies and converts them mainly to water, and carbon dioxide which can safely be discharged to atmosphere.

Babcock Wanson's Deodorising (DEO) Thermal Oxidisers are well known throughout the world as being the Best Available Technology to treat to eliminate the objectionable elements of smell from the effluent of production processes which generate odours. These used be mainly in the food industry including food, feed, beverage, and fermentation sectors, but now the Energy from Waste sector is becoming increasingly important.
The choice between a recuperative oxidiser with heat recovery, or a regenerative oxidiser with minimal fuel consumption is determined by the specific requirements of each customer and the quantity of effluent to be treated.
Recuperative Thermal Oxidation
This is robust technology that adapts well to changing conditions, therefore there is maximum flexibility and minimum downtime.
Regenerative Thermal Oxidation
Again this is proven thermal technology which is adaptable to the widest range of industries.
Long regarded as an industry with the worst problems of odour generation, Babcock Wanson DEO Recuperative Thermal Oxidisers are now the industry standard equipment. The design will cope with the moist air directly from the cookers minimising the need for additional water treatment. Babcock Wanson has developed a special range of multiple fuel burners which enable tallow or other low cost fuels to be utilised in a fully modulating system.
The snack food sector, especially that involved in frying, has used thermal oxidation to cleanse the foul air from the fryers, or other odour generating sources. The chemical compounds responsible for odours are broken down by the oxidation process enabling the final emissions to be discharged to atmosphere.
Energy from Waste
The process of autoclaving municipal solid waste with steam gives rise to emissions which are similar to those generated by the rendering industry, so expertise from the latter has enabled Babcock Wanson to offer a most effective solution.
The low grade emissions from building air changes and storage areas can be treated by conventional means, but the really foul air from the autoclave discharge needs to be treated differently. High in both odour generating species and VOCs, thermal oxidation is an ideal treatment process to deal with both issues, and may enable some heat to be recovered to reduce site power consumption.
