The partners have a launched a ‘Get to the Game’ travel platform, where fans can post details of their match day travel and offer their spare car seats to other fans for a split of the total petrol costs.

Liftshare CEO Ali Clabburn said: "Not only is The Football League's desire to enter the sharing economy going to help fans save a lot when travelling to games each week, it gives supporters a rare chance to help their favourite team do its part for the environment too.

“We want to help fans save one million car miles and save £100,000 each week. With fewer cars on the road and a chance to get more supporters in the stands each week, the partnership is a big win for The Football League and its fans alike.”

Greening the game

The ‘Get to the Game’ platform is also available as an app, allowing fans to message each other and make of one-tap instant payments.

Football League marketing director Drew Barrand said the new agreement would help boost attendance at games round the country.

The car-sharing scheme is the latest example of green ambition from the football world after Southampton Football Club became the first team in Europe to light its stadium fully with LEDs last summer.

Back in 2012, Newcastle United became the first football club in the world to be ‘energy positive’ thanks to boiler optimisation, lighting upgrades and behavioural changes within the operational staff.
