DTI to consult on EC’s proposed 75% target for packaging waste recovery

The other targets for 2006 being suggested by the Commission are: recycling of 55-70% of packaging waste, 20% of plastic packaging waste, and 55% of paper/board packaging.

Last week it was announced that under new targets for 2002, UK businesses engaged in handling large amounts of packaging will have to recover 59% of packaging waste and carry out 19% material-specific recycling (see related story).

“I am determined to further build on the UK’s recent improved performance in limiting the effects of waste packaging on the environment,” said Minister for Industry and Energy Brian Wilson at the launch of the consultation. “Keeping the environment clean is not just about producing renewable energy but about disposing of non biodegradable items in a responsible way.”

“The Commission’s proposal sets challenging targets,” said Wilson. “This consultation will play a crucial role in educating all key stakeholders, particularly business on all the key issues. It is important that all views are heard before any final legislation is laid.”
