Landfill fire could burn for a week

The blaze, the cause of which is still being investigated, started in the Kerdiffstown landfill site near Naas.

Fire brigades from Dublin, Kildare, Laois and Wicklow, along with the County Kildare Civil Defence, have been fighting the fire since 8:30 on Sunday morning (January 30).

The site is shut, and will remain so for the foreseeable future, as firefighters begin dismantling a huge pile of burning waste covering about 40 square metres and begin damping-down its contents.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said: “Smoke emissions have already been reduced.

“Fire brigades will remain on site into the evening, and will be returning today (Monday).

“Even though good progress is being made, it is expected that complete extinguishment of the fire could take at least a week.”
