Mitie signs up to RE100 following EP100 and EV100 commitments

Mitie has become the first facilities management firm to sign up to all three of the Climate Group's initiatives, after committing to source 100% renewables as part of the RE100 platform and having already signed up to the EV100 and EP100 initiatives.

Mitie has already switched to 100% renewable energy across its business

The announcement from Mitie builds on the company’s recently announced net-zero target for 2025. Mitie has set out a three-pillar decarbonisation plan centred around power and transport; waste; and the energy efficiency of buildings.

The power proportion of the overall plan, called Plan Zero, binds Mitie to source 100% renewable electricity for operations through subsidy-free Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and to switch to low-carbon heating systems before offsetting any residual emissions from heat.

As such, Mitie has signed up to the Climate Group’s RE100 initiative and Mitie has already switched to 100% renewable energy across its business.

Mitie had also signed up to the Climate Group’s EV100 initiative and EP100 initiative. The EP100 initiative is a global scheme aimed at uniting corporates in a collective drive to increase energy productivity (i.e. achieving a higher economic output per unit of energy consumed).

By joining the initiative, Mitie has committed to double its energy productivity, which will be measured by the amount of energy used per pound of revenue generated. While Mitie has a 25-year timeframe to achieving the target, the company is confident that it will achieve the goal by 2025.

Mitie became a member of EV100 in 2019. As part of that commitment, Mitie will convert its entire transport fleet of 5,500 cars and vans to zero-emission vehicles. Mitie believes this will be achieved by 2025. By coupling the vehicle transition with a plan to reduce business travel through video conferencing tools, Mitie believes it will reach the EP100 target in five years.

According to the Climate Group, businesses signed up to its EP100 initiative have collectively shaved $55m (£45m) off their energy costs by implementing better efficiency measures

As part of its commitments to all of the initiatives, Mitie is developing a new system that will enable it to procure renewable electricity to charge employee EVs at home. This, Mitie claims, will enable the EV fleet to become carbon neutral as only renewables will be used.

Mitie’s director of sustainability and social value Simon King said: “As the first facilities management company and only the eighth business in the world to join all three of The Climate Group’s initiatives, we’re proud to be leading by example as we act on our commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2025. Having already switched to 100% renewable energy across our business, we’re driving ahead with our fully electric fleet and well on our way to fulfilling our Plan Zero pledge to eliminate carbon emissions from both power and transport.

“The obvious next step is to use our experience and expertise to support our clients in switching to renewable energy and achieving their own net-zero targets.”
