New programme aims to stabilise unsafe mining land

The programme, administered by English Partnerships, will make funding available to local authorities and National Park Authorities, to help them stabilise areas which have been left hazardous by abandoned non-coal mine workings.

The Land Stabilisation Programme will provide for grants to cover stabilisation costs, including investigations, surveys, stabilisation works, and pre-and post-treatment monitoring.

English Partnerships will judge projects in terms of the protection they will offer, on completion, to life and property, taking into account value for money. Applicants will have to demonstrate that they have taken full and careful account of local views expressed through community consultation, the Regional Development Agency (RDA) and other statutory bodies.
