Two Indonesian women have been subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged murder of the newborn child, who was abandoned at the refuse drop-off point in Yuen Long.
According to a report on the Chinese news site The Standard, police received a call from a 26-year-old Indonesian domestic helper who said she disposed of her baby on Wednesday (November 16).
She had been working in Hong Kong and was employed by a family looking after two young children. She gave birth herself on Wednesday and was said to be shocked. She called her friend, also a domestic helper, for help and afterwards reportedly decided to dispose of the baby.
Police officers searched through the waste collection centre, but believe the baby may have been transported to a nearby landfill site in Tuen Mun. Around 20 officers and 10 firefighters equipped with life detectors were dispatched to search through the landfill.
A police officer told reporters that the baby had little chance of surviving as it may have gone through the hydraulic press machine of a refuse truck. The two women were still being detained for questioning late last night.
