In total 2,700 on-the-go recycling facilities will be installed in over 250 sites including Edinburgh Airport and Nevis Range Mountain Resort. Shopping centres and universities will also benefit from new bins.
The initiative is being funded by Zero Waste Scotland through its ‘Recycle on the Go’ capital support fund to the tune of £850,000. It is hoped greater levels of dry recyclables such as newspapers, plastic bottles and aluminium drinks cans will be recovered.
It will also support wider moves by the Scottish Government to address the problem of litter. Zero Waste Scotland has already committed over £2m to various anti-litter initiatives.
Its director Iain Gulland said the new recycling bins would be strategically placed in locations that attract a lot of footfall.
“There’s real value in the goods we throw away, and the small effort it takes to separate waste for recycling can contribute to economic growth for Scotland,” he added.
Guidance is also available to help organisations manage or implement their own on-the-go recycling schemes.
