Instead of putting bin tags on refuse, residents of South Dublin County Council, will pay into an account, which will then be debited each time their rubbish is collected.
A scanner on the collection truck will detect which home, and which account, each bin corresponds to and depending on whether or not there is credit in the account, lift the bin and tip its contents into its storage area.
“The system is designed to make things as simple as possible for customers,” said John Quinlivan, the council’s senior executive officer.
“The abolition of the tag will remove problems with theft, loss or forgery.
“With the introduction of more payment options for customers, we aim to ensure that the South Dublin refuse service continues to be the best in the county.”
In the UK pilots were carried out using microchips in bins to encourage recycling.
