WWF believes that CO2 emission and energy intensity trends for the Mediterranean region are so serious that delegates at the third EuroMed Energy Forum must rethink plans for the region. It cites predictions of a 50% increase in CO2 emissions between 1996 and 2010, reaching 2.2 billion tonnes. It also refers to energy intensity annual increases of 3.1% between 1980 and 1995.
“Those countries without a fully-developed energy infrastructure have a unique opportunity to leapfrog unsustainable energy technologies and invest instead in a variety of commercially-available technologies that are cleaner and provide better quality services,” says WWF.
Overall, WWF accuses the EuroMed Energy Forum of ignoring its own action plan and postponing introduction of energy efficient technologies and renewable energies.
