BRE develops sustainable tools

The BRE SMARTWaste system comprises a set of tools to help construction companies apply the concept of sustainable waste management. These include SMARTStart, a simple waste auditing system designed to allow managers to easily evaluate material waste across a company's sites and a first step to a sustainable waste management plan. As waste containers leave the site, the percentage volume of waste groups is visually assessed and recorded..

SMARTStartLG was developed in partnership with Movement for Innovation (M4I). This tool is recommended to help:

It is a waste auditing and benchmarking tool to help inform and influence decisions on process re-engineering and to maximise opportunities for waste minimisation. The system allows monitoring of segregation targets throughout the lifetime of a project and encourages continual improvement.

This tool has been trialled by Durham County Council and some of its contractors in a strategic partnership. This trial involves approximately 15 to 20 projects.
Also part of the range of tools is BREMAP, a web-based GIS system developed by BRE and funded by Biffaward through Landfill Tax Credits and a grant from the Institution of Civil Engineers R&D Enabling Fund.
