Coffin gets a new life as it is put out for recycling in Surrey

Other notable items included two van loads of stamps, a grand piano, a caravan and diving equipment including an oxygen tank, wetsuit and fins. The news comes as the council announced it had reached a 50% household waste recycling rate for the county.

The council says it is looking to build on its success and aims to hit a 70% household waste recycling target by 2014.

The council’s cabinet member for environment, Dr Lynne Hack, said: “While we may not be able to recycle all the waste produced yet, we will work hard to treat everything we can, no matter how weird and wonderful it is.”
