Landfill extension plans dropped over costs

Recycling and waste management company SITA UK has dropped plans to extend a landfill site over costs.

SITA had wanted to expand the Seghill landfill site in Northumberland, but North Tyneside Planning Committee turned down the application in February.

The firm has now said the costs of an appeal would be too much and are to look at other options for the site.

John Grainger, general manager for SITA in the North East, said: "We have decided against pursuing the case for extending the Seghill landfill site as the cost of the appeal process would have been significant in the current economic climate, and there would be no certainty of a positive outcome.

"However, we will be continuing to provide much needed additional landfill capacity in the region for the years to come, which is why we are looking at alternative options in the current portfolio of sites, and a reduced scheme at Seghill landfill site.

"Of course, any firm proposals will go out to consultation and be subject to detailed scrutiny from all the relevant organisations."

Lindsay Perks, a spokesman for NoToLandfill who opposed the application, said: "We have argued consistently that there was no need for the development quite apart from its negative environmental impact.

"It seems they now agree with us and are no longer happy with the commercial viability of their proposal.

"Needless to say we will be maintaining a close watching brief on any alternatives they may be proposing and oppose anything we regard as damaging to the environment and local communities.

"This outcome is in no small measure the result of the fantastic support we have received from the local community and like-minded people elsewhere."
