ISO 50001 will be launched in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 15 much sooner than many commenters had expected.
ISO 50001 was developed as the future International Standard for energy management by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) in 2008.
It aim is to bring together energy management not just across Europe, but across the entire globe.
However, despite initially being planned for a launch early this year, it was not expected to go live until around October.
Mr Fry, who is ESTA chairman and a visiting professor at City University in London, was forced to update his talk this morning when he heard the news.
He presented at Nemex, part of Sustainabilitylive! in Birmingham's NEC, describing his surprise at the speed of the launch.
He said: "It was a surprise and the timescale is much shorter than was originally anticipated.
"But these are good developments - I'd rather that than long delays - but it does mean more meeting to sort out the finer points."
