Efficient boilers cut gas consumption by almost 20% for Police force

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has reduced its annual gas consumption by almost 20% across 10 sites by installing new boiler optimisation technology to improve efficiency.

The police force implemented the Energys boiler optimiser technology across 10 of its sites to improve building efficiency as part of a larger programme of work towards becoming more sustainable. The force is committed to reducing carbon emissions from its buildings by 30% in the period 2009 to 2016. 

The patented technology optimises the firing pattern, saving on gas. By extending the cycle and utilising the large volume of hot water that exists in a commercial system to maintain temperatures, efficiency is improved. The Energys technology also allows for remote access to enable easy monitoring and reporting on energy use.

The force said its stance on being environmentally proactive is about more than “just doing the right thing”, it is about delivering savings that ensure it offers the communities of Avon and Somerset value for money.

Pollution reducing technologies

Similar boiler optimisation technology was recently installed by telecoms company BT, which spent £1.2m in October last year to incorporate Sabien’s M2G load optimisation control technology across 246 sites; cutting carbon emissions by between 10% and 25% annually. 

Emergency services in the UK were given a boost towards cutting their carbon emissions by the Government awarding a £5m grant in September. The funding was awarded as part of the 2014 Clean Vehicle Technology Fund (CVTF), managed by the department for transport for the implementation of a range of cutting-edge pollution reducing technologies to 1,080 vehicles. One of the winning projects will see 175 ambulances in Yorkshire powered by solar panels.
