Investment bank lends Turkey €60 million for wastewater treatment

The loan is being made available for 20 years to the Mersin Water and Sewerage Administration (MESKI), and will fund projects such as the construction of a full biological wastewater treatment plant, outfall pumping stations and a deep-sea outlet.

The scheme is intended to contribute to the environmental protection of the Mediterranean sea, and to increase the quality of life in the greater metropolitan Mersin, an expanding city with around 700,000 citizens. The population is expected to grow to 1.8 million by 2025.

The project will also reinforce previous EIB funding of wastewater treatment systems of the nearby cities of Adana and Tarsus, which discharge into the same bay.
