Telling the Irish Independent that it is important to take on the “compelling challenge to preserve our planet”, she revealed that she has installed energy saving light bulbs throughout the building, together with a new temperature control system.

“While a public listed building such as Aras an Uachtarain presents its own unique issues, it is important that, as ‘first home’ in the land, a lead be taken in the introduction of environmentally friendly measures,” she said.

“I am happy to report that encouraging progress is being made, with more to follow.”

The announcement comes soon after the Government revealed a minimum energy efficiency standard for light bulbs in its first carbon budget.

This will put an end to inefficient lighting from 2009, Environment Minister John Gormley said.

Other measures adopted by the President in her residence include making tractors used there biofuel-compatible.
