SRI LANKA: Clean-up begins on Columbo’s man-made lake system
A pilot project by the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation Development Corporation has begun on the clean-up of Beira Lake in Columbo.
Beira Lake consists of a series of connected lakes created by a Portuguese engineer in 1554. The clean-up project has begun by way of dredging in the South-West Lake. According to the Sri Lankan Sunday Observer, Beira Lake pollution arises primarily from sewerage systems emptying into, and, to a lesser extent, from industrial discharges.
