South Africa to tackle emissions

News in Brief

Africa's biggest polluter - South Africa - has decided to look at ways of greening its industry in an attempt to set an example for other developing economies to follow.

The Government has asked scientist's working at the University of Cape Town's Energy Research Centre to develop a long-term carbon emission reduction programme.

South Africa, like other developing nations, was not set targets by the Kyoto Protocol and is under no obligation under international law to address its emissions.

But officials say the country wants to do its bit and demonstrate to other emerging economies like China, India and Brazil that is possible to couple rapid economic growth with sustainable development.
