The certification is a mark of recognition of the company’s commitments to successfully measure, manage and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste output.

npower’s real estate sustainability manager Jonathan Hulbert said: “npower has placed a high priority on minimising our impact on the environment and are proud to be leading by example in this field. We have achieved this using many of the products and services we offer our customers, such as demand side response and use of renewable sources.”

npower has incorporated a number of significant changes across its offices and customer call centre to help reduce carbon emissions by 15.9%. The company has implementing a range of energy saving techniques including using solar to heat water, wind turbines, new lighting and encouraging "a more flexible working environment".

Innovative trials

Two of the key developments that led to the certification was the creation of an Innovation Centre in Solihull to trial the latest innovative technologies, such as intelligent LEDs and state-of-the-art solar panels, and the acquisition of RUMM.

RUMM uses real-time data analytics to help businesses monitor energy consumption, offering solutions and remedies to reduce the numbers in the process. So far they have helped British business save up to £4bn on their annual energy bills.

The Carbon Trust’s managing director Darran Messem said: “As an energy supplier, it’s no surprise that npower understands the environmental and financial value that can be achieved through improving the efficiency of its own operations. We’d like to congratulate everyone at npower that has contributed to the company becoming the first power utility to be awarded triple certification to the Carbon Trust Standard.”

Setting the standard

The Carbon Trust helps companies through international verification in reducing resource use and waste and offers tangible proof to customers, employees, shareholders. Last year O2 became the first mobile telecommunications company in the world to achieve the Carbon Trust Triple Standard.

Earlier this year AkzoNobel decorative paints saved 1000 tonnes of paint waste every by transforming it into products for construction and landscaping a process that saw them receive the Carbon Triple Trust Standard.
