edie wins ‘Best Environmental Website’ award

edie has been recognised as the "Best Environmental Website" at the 10th British Environment and Media Awards held in London on 16 February 1999.

The judges praised edie’s “excellent design,” and described the site as “bright, lively and energetic, with well organised and consistent navigation.”

“edie is only nine months old, but already is rapidly developing as a significant portal for environmental news and information on the Web,” said new media development manager, Carl Myers, collecting the award for Faversham House Group. “We are particularly pleased to get our first award before our first birthday. It is a great boost for the edie team, and it bears out our strategy of putting the latest information technology to work for the environmental community and co-operating with other organisations to make large amounts of specialised news and information available free of charge.”

Other BEMA recipients include the BBC, ABC News, John Vidal of The Guardian, and the Nottingham Evening Post. Also, the chairman and chief executive of Iceland was presented with the Special Awareness Award by Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, in recognition of his stance against GMOs.
