With West African industry and manufacturing sectors in need of increased electricity supply, a meeting to plan for more production took place in Accra, Ghana.

The issue of local renewable sources of energy was broached at the meeting, but was not the focus.

West Africa has suffered from an electricity crisis since 1997. The crisis has led to plans for a regional approach to electricity generation and to interconnections between national energy grids being established.
