Measuring unpredictable flow conditions
Wide variations in effluent flow rates resulting from changing production schedules or part filled pipes makes accurate flow measurements difficult. But without an accurate flow rate, it is not possible to extract a sample of the discharge for analysis.Platon Flow Management has met this challenge with the introduction of an open channel/part filled pipe flowmeter. The submerged sensor has the ability to detect flow rates as low as 50mm/s and as high as 5m/s, enabling the single sensor to measure unpredictable flow conditions. Cross sectional area is deduced from the liquid level which is measured either by a pressure transmitter integral to the velocity probe, or an alternative level measurement method. The velocity is combined with cross sectional area to provide the flow rate and integrated to record the total fluid flow.
Where the measurement has to be taken in an inhospitable area or remote location, the optional data logger with 250,000 entries, the equivalent of six months readings at two-minute intervals, can provide the necessary documentation. An integral PSTN modem can also be provided to communicate to the plant from a remote location eliminating the need for expensive cabling and civil work.
The data logged by the new sensor can also be used to determine how much surface rainwater, which runs into the plant main outlet, is being counted as actual waste from the plant. This way the plant need not treat rainwater as waste and should not have to pay accordingly.
