OECD publishes free database of environmental taxes

"Green taxes work." This is the opinion of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and to spread the word it has launched a web-based database of about 170 environmental taxes and 160 environmental fees and charges in use in OECD member countries.

OECD calculates that revenues from environmentally-related taxes represent about 2.5% of member countries’ GDP and about seven percent of total tax revenue.

Interest in environmental taxation is high, with some countries like the UK seeking to demonstrate its effectiveness by publishing reports on its impacts (see related story). OECD admits that environmentally-related taxes, charges and fees have, thus far, been primarily introduced in the areas of motor vehicle, energy and waste management taxation.
