Plans for Mars wind turbine scrapped
Mars Petcare has decided not to progress with a planning application to build a wind turbine in Birstall, Yorkshire, says the company.
The planning application for the turbine was approved in 2010 but received complaints from councillors and residents pushing the company to scrap the plan.
A Mars spokesperson told edie: “The decision has been taken following mixed views amongst the local community and the council during the planning process, as well as wider business considerations”.
The company said it remains committed to its target of reducing fossil-fuel energy, greenhouse gas emissions and water use by 25% by 2015.
The spokesperson added: “This will be met through operational and asset efficiencies and we are on track to meeting this target.
“We will remain on target through improvements in equipment efficiencies and by selecting energy efficient assets going forward.”
In June, Mars Chocolate revealed it was on track to exceed a 2012 target of sourcing 20% of its cocoa supply from certified sustainable sources, after sourcing 10% in 2011.
This committment forms part of the chocolate manufacturers drive to source its entire cocoa supply from certified sustainable sources by 2020.
