Prevention & Recycling of Urban Waste: An inventory of approaches in 18 European cities is the product of a three-year project organised by the French body, The Agency for Environment & Energy Management (Ademe). Cities signing up to the project had to commit to identifying waste levels, composition and sources before moving onto the introduction of separate collection and treatment.

The publication provides case studies for the 18 participating cities, along with breakdowns of how much waste recycling goes on in each city and contacts for more information. The participating cities are:

  • Spain – Barcelona, Jerez de la Frontera
  • Belgium – Brussels
  • Italy – Carpi, Fiumicino, a district in Rome
  • Ireland – Dublin
  • Germany – Hanover, Munich, Stuttgart
  • Finland – Helsinki
  • France – Hurepoix, Lille
  • United Kingdom – Milton Keynes, Leeds
  • Portugal – Porto
  • Austria – Salzburg
  • The Netherlands – the Hague

Details on recycling regulatory frameworks in Italy, Ireland, the UK and Spain are also provided.

The booklet is available on the web, or copies can be ordered (in English, French, Spanish or Italian) from Energie-Cités.
