UKRAINE: America funds regional environmental centre in Kiev
A regional environmental centre is planned for the Ukraine capital, Kiev. It will receive funds from the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Agreement for partial US funding of the Kiev regional environmental centre was formalised at a meeting between US Vice President Al Gore and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. Plans for a further four centres in the former USSR – Moldova, the Caucasus, Russia and Central Asia – also exist.
Efforts to establish Regional Environmental Centres in the former Soviet Union is being supported financially by the EU, the US and, to a lesser extent, Norway.
Regional Environmental Centres are designed to be independent, non-governmental and non-profit.
