Mitsubishi helps build Fortress
Fortress Recycling is running a 7.5-tonne Mitsubishi Fuso Canter specially built to handle containers of various shapes and sizes. The Canter 7C14 was supplied by Birmingham dealer Gerard Mann Commercials and its dual-role design is believed to be unique.
It has a Hiab crane-mounted immediately behind the cab, used for lifting large, front-end loader containers with capacities of up to 10 cubic metres (14 cubic yards). It can also transport standard wheelie bins, which are taken on and off its PD Stevens & Sons dropside body via a Del tail-lift.
Fortress Recycling's first Mitsubishi Fuso Canter has joined a mixed, Mercedes and Volvo fleet of 12 trucks, ranging in size from 18 to 32 tonnes gvw. Other recent arrivals include a pair of 18-tonne Mercedes Axor, one a skip loader, the other a tanker, both of which were also supplied by Gerard Mann.
Co-founder Andy Pass senior explains: "We bought the Canter for its high payload and because it is relatively compact for a 7.5-tonner. This makes it exceptionally manoeuvrable and able to access tight spots that a bigger truck couldn't reach.
"This vehicle has a support role - we use it to deliver empty bins and containers to new clients; likewise, if a container gets damaged, we'll use the Canter to take in a replacement and remove the original.
"As far as I'm aware there's not another truck of this size in the industry that is capable of doing the same jobs. It's a cutting-edge design."
