Quality drive set to benefit wood reprocessors
Wood recyclers have received a boost with the launch of a new standard that guarantees the quality of recovered wood products.
The PAS 111 specification, launched by WRAP today (April 2), sets reprocessing requirements for wood recyclers and will increase customer confidence in the quality of those products that comply with the standard.
There are already strong markets for higher grade recycled wood – in applications including panel board, landscaping and animal bedding – and PAS 111 will help to expand these.
In turn, this should help to divert more wood from landfill into recycled products or energy recovery. In 2010, the UK generated 4.1m tonnes of waste wood, of which 2.44m tonnes was recovered, but the remainder was sent to landfill.
PAS 111 will apply to several markets including panel board manufacture, biomass energy generation, animal bedding, mulches and equine surfaces.
Peter Butt of the Wood Recyclers Association, which has supported the development of PAS 111, said: “We have worked closely with WRAP and BSI on the development of PAS 111, and its launch is a positive step for the wood recycling industry.
“It gives our members the opportunity to guarantee the quality and standard of their products, and give their customers added confidence in the products they buy.”
