Three people are being treated in hospital, with serious but not thought to be life-threatening injuries, following the blaze.

The Three casualties were taken to hospital from the scene by air ambulance as fire fighters set about extinguishing the blaze.

The fire on Tuesday (October 12) at a waste processing company’s premises on the Burscough Industrial Estate in Lancashire needed more than 60 fire fighters and ten fire engines.

A Lancashire fire and rescue spokesman said: “The smoke was analysed as of low toxicity and the plume of smoke a considerable distance away from people or livestock, the water used to fight the fire inevitably becomes polluted by the products of combustion.

“Consequently, in addition to fighting the fire a major part of the Fire and Rescue Service response was to ensure that this water did not enter surface drains, vital work that was successfully carried out.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
