Two bin men taken to hospital in refuse truck accident

Two Veolia collection crew workers were taken to hospital when their refuse truck overturned when trying to turn a tight corner on a south London road last week.

The driver and one of his passengers were treated for minor injuries at the scene before being driven by ambulance to Croydon University Hospital. The truck was subsequently removed and returned to a nearby depot in West Croydon.

According to local newspaper reports, an eye witness who was travelling behind the truck in a minicab when it crashed said both men appeared ok, but “quite stunned by what had happened”.

A spokesperson for Croydon Council, who sub-contracts its waste services to Veolia, told the Croydon Guardian: “As a precautionary measure, two Veolia staff were taken to hospital following the accident. Veolia has started an investigation to identify the cause of the accident.”

The driver reportedly was an agency worker who has not been used by Veolia since the incident. His co-worker has yet to return to work.
